Success Tips for Writers

The amount of each reason, and the rankings, vary over time, but these are the primary reasons we decline stories:

  • Limited Ability to Publish - All editors will tell you they receive many more submissions than they can publish. Unfortunately, some pretty good manuscripts end up being turned down. Since Short-Story.Me! publishes multiple genres, that mathematical problem also occurs in each genre. We try to mix what we publish, so we cannot accept a large imbalance of genres within a period of time.

  • Stories Not finished - Often, we find a good idea, a decent plot or an intriguing writing style that has potential, but the writer stopped too soon. There are two skills a successful author has that most who try writing don't have. One is rewriting. Great writing does not just flow; it is work that usually undergoes many versions before it is final. Most successful authors dislike editing and rewriting the most of all their tasks, but they do it. The second skill is to willingly accept objective third party input before the manuscript is submitted for publishing. Major publishing houses have editors for even the most famous and respected authors for a reason. Someone has to look out for the reader. If the reader doesn't "get it" and like it, it matters not what you think, unless you are just writing for yourself. Having a writers' group or someone who reads your genre review your material can be helpful. This not not to say you have to make changes based on their opinions, but you should at least listen, and then decide. If you don't have an objective resource available to you, the best alternative is to put your "finished" story aside for a month, then come back and read it as if for the first time. You may be surprised what you see.

  • Not Following Submission Guidelines - As noted in another Success Tip, editors don't have the spare time to try to "make" your story fit their needs. If your story is the wrong length, is not legitimately a genre requested or is formatted incorrectly, editors may read it, but they may not.
  •   Punctuation and Grammar - Literature is not the same as an instant message, tweet or email. It has rules that make sense and work. Use them. The most common punctuation error in submissions is missing commas, with sentences as run-on collections of words instead of delineated, related phrases, as we normally read.

  • Not Really a Writer Yet - Writing, like most talents, is a combination of art and skill. Some manuscripts are simply written by people who have not mastered one or both of those elements. That's not to say they could not; they just have not.

How to concentrate on studies?

Are you having trouble concentrating on your studies? Well, don't worry – it happens to the best of students. To concentrate on your studies, you may just need to shake up your study patterns, study in a quieter place free of outside distraction, try a new technique, or simply come up with a really effective study plan that allows your mind breaks as often as you need. Experiment until you find what works for you. With the right set-up, concentrating should be easier.

1) Choose the right spot.
A quiet place with a suitable environment. Whether it is your room or a library, choose an atmosphere that is silent & free of distractions in order to concentrate. It should be away from the TV, pets, and anything else. What's more, you want a comfotable chair and good lighting. There should be no strain on your back, neck, or eyes – pain is also a distraction.

2) Have everything you need to study.
Your pencils and pens, highlighters and books should be within your reach so that you are not distracted while studying

3) Have a snack nearby.
Try to keep it to something simple that you can repeat, like a few nuts, chocolate bar. Keep water nearby, too.

4) Make sure your cell phone and other electronic devices are turned off.
This will help you avoid temptations to be off-task and allow you to stay on your plan. Only use your computer, if you need it for your studies; otherwise, it's just an unnecessary risk. As for your phone – put it in airplane mode unless you need it on for an emergency.

5) Make a timetable.
If you have a long night of studying ahead of you, make a plan for the day. Aim to work for 30-60 minute periods with 5-10 minute breaks in between. Your brain needs the break to recharge. It's not laziness.

6) Set aside time to worry or think about other things.
We feel like we don't have control over our thoughts, but we do. Tell yourself that you'll think about that problem or that girl or boy when you're finished.

7) Make notes on the concepts, characters, plots, or events described.
Use as few words as possible and brief examples to tell what you mean to say. Abbreviate the spellings of what you write in your notes. Note page numbers, titles and authors of  books

8) Get enough sleep.
The benefits of sleep are practically innumerable. Not only are your hormones regulated and information synthesized, but it helps you fire on all worksin the next day, too.

9)Eat healthy.
You are what you eat after all, and if you eat healthy, your mind will be healthy, too. Aim to eat your favourite colourful fruits and vegetables.

10) Follow all the concentration steps and tips.
Study is such an important part of  life and to learn how to maintain good focus and concentration is a lifelong skill. So follow all the concentration steps and tips.

How to concentrate your mind?

Do you find it difficult to focus your mind on one thing for more than a few moments? Does your mind constantly jump from one thought to another? You can improve your focus and strengthen your concentration skills. The power of concentration is essential for success in every area of life, at work and at home, at school and in college, in sports and in business, for achieving goals and completing tasks, and for self-improvement and meditation. With a focused mind, you will do everything more efficiently, better, and in less time.

1) Understand what concentration is:
“Concentration is taking your mind off many things and putting it on one thing at a time.”

2) Stay calm.
Deep concentration is a matter of increasing or directing your life-force or conscious, cosmic energy. The more of this kind of energy you have, the better. Scattered energy doesn’t help. It must be calm, focused energy. Learn to be calmly concentrated and be concentratedly calm.

3) Take breaks.
Go outside and breathe deeply or take a brisk walk. Make yourself do this often and you’ll be able to return to your task recharged and ready to focus more creatively.

4) Learn to meditate:
Meditation is the most powerful of all concentration enhancement techniques. Learn a few simple meditation techniques and practice them at least five minutes daily.

5) While meditating, watch your breath
Don’t control it in any way, just observe. This teaches you to focus your mind on one thing at a time. As you observe your breath, it will slow down, along with your mind  and you move into a dynamic, peaceful  state of being. Your mind will become recharged and creatively receptive.

6) Count.
If you find it difficult to let go of your thoughts, try counting slowly as you breathe. Watch your thoughts and try to resist following them. Turn your attention to the count as you breathe out.
7) Find a comfortable position and don’t allow yourself to move.

Concentrate on what you are doing or watching, drawing your attention away from physical distractions, and focus your thoughts on your task.

8) Monitor your mind and take second thoughts.

Noticing where your mind has gone , gives you the chance for a second thought.  That very thought disengages your brain from where it has wandered and activates brain circuits that can help your attention to return to the work at hand.

9) Practice a daily mindfulness session.

Practice the mind concentration tricks not in a single day, but in everyday. Thats will give a good concentration power.

The Benefits of Learning How to Focus Your Mind:
  1. You will be able to focus your attention on what you are doing.
  2. Better focus means doing fewer mistakes and errors.
  3. You will improve your ability to learn and study faster.
  4. You will be able to think more clearly.
  5. Improving your concentration would improve your memory.
  6. You would be able to focus easily on a task or goal until you complete it.
  7. Your ability to pay attention to details would increase.
